Tom Rhoades was ordained in the United Methodist Church in 1999 and is now a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, serving as a maritime chaplain for The Seamen’s Church Institute. After serving United Methodist congregations in Bald Knob and Hardy, Ark., he went to work as a deckhand for American Commercial Lines in 2008 and then as a cook for ARTCo.  In 2014, Rev. Rhoades became a non-stipendiary associate chaplain for The Seamen’s Church Institute (SCI) and continued to work as cook.  In 2018, he became a fulltime chaplain for SCI and moved to Baton Rouge, La. and continues to serve mariners in the Gulf and Houston Ship Channel.
