Mark Sawyer, Marine Operations Compliance, Marathon Petroleum Corporation

Mark Sawyer spearheads regulatory compliance and maritime stakeholder engagement efforts for Marathon Petroleum Corporation’s (MPC) Marine Transportation Organization headquartered in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. He ensures operational readiness of the marine fleet and proficiency of crewmembers. Sawyer serves on the National Towing Safety Advisory Committee and as Marathon’s representative to the American Petroleum Institute’s marine subcommittee. He is the executive director and founder of the Marine Compliance Alliance, a trade association and information exchange hub for inland marine compliance professionals.

Sawyer transitioned to Marathon in July 2019 after retiring at the rank of Commander in the United States Coast Guard. He served for over twenty years supporting the Coast Guard strategic missions of marine safety, security, and environmental protection, and filled various roles and capacities throughout the United States and Europe. Sawyer holds a Master of Maritime Business Administration and Logistics from Texas A&M University, a Master of Science in Safety, and a Master of Business Administration. He is also a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Command and General Staff College. He resides in Paducah, Kentucky and has a wife, Mollie, and two children, Brooklyn and Zachary.
