Painted non-skid coatings on workboats still rely on Stone Age technology when it comes to the aggregate. Hard, abrasive materials like black beauty and aluminum oxide predominate. But these rocks are added to mostly flexible urethane topcoats, which simply cannot hold onto them, so the aggregate pops loose, and there goes the non-skid.  Now there is a rubber aggregate specifically formulated to work with modern coatings.
